Electrolysis

Electrolysis (2012)

Electrolysis is a ninety minute installation piece based on a field recording of a large electrical transformer and its surrounding environment. The recording was made on a late January afternoon at Occidental College after discovering the loud hum of an electrical transformer during many walks through the campus and surrounding neighborhoods. The sound was processed live using a digital version of Terry Riley’s Time Lag Accumulator which provided a constant repetition and smearing of the sound environment. No other treatments were made during or after the recording. The piece is intended to be played back in a gallery or other immersive listening space where listeners can come and go.
