Residency at STEIM

I will taking three CalArts Experimental Sound Practices students to STEIM in Amsterdam for a 2 1/2 week residency at the Dutch experimental music center. We will be working together as a group to create a unique performance. We will give a lecture / concert on Wednesday, October 14th at STEIM.

ESP ENSEMBLE

Coming from CalArts in California the ESP Ensemble is a quartet of composer-performers who are interested in exploring electro-acoustic improvisation and interactive audio-visual performance systems. The ensemble draws from a wide array of sound making devices including networked audio-visual laptop instruments, video cameras, effect pedals, electric cello, saxophone, percussion, voice, and various other sound making devices. While at STEIM we are interested in exploring ideas surrounding improvisation and performance practice for electro-acoustic-visual ensembles in addition to learning more about instrument sensors and the video tracking capabilities found in STEIM’s Junxion software.

Hydrophone workshop at Machine Project

A hydrophone is a microphone designed to be used underwater for recording or listening to underwater sound. Used in World War I, hydrophones were employed by convoy escorts to detect U-boats, greatly lessening the effectiveness of the submarine. From late in World War I until the introduction of active sonar, hydrophones were the sole method for submarines to detect targets while submerged, and remain useful today (source: wikipedia).

Come and build your very own hydrophone in this two-day workshop! Clay Chaplin will lead you through the construction of your hydrophone using a kit we’ll provide, then test it out in the Silver Lake reservoir.

Sunday, August 16th: Part 1

We’ll have hydrophone kits for your enjoyment. Minimal soldering experience required and plus we’ll help you. While constructing our hydrophones we’ll talk about field recording and more specifically about the properties of sound underwater and how hydrophones work. Once you’ve built your hydrophone take it home for a week and make a bunch of recordings.

Sunday, August 23rd: Part 2

Bring your hydrophone, your trusty field recorder (we’ll be able to supply a few to borrow if you don’t have one), and any recordings you have made. Right off the bat we’ll all head to Silver Lake to record what lurks beneath the surface. Then we’ll trek back to Machine and have a listening party. The real fun of making field recordings with a group is listening to everyone’s recordings.

California Ear Unit @ REDCAT
Inspired by the classic David Bowie pop hit, The E.A.R. Unit surveys fresh new works by young mavericks (living at this very moment throughout the American country-side from whatever origins they may be). The ensemble plays Daniel Wohl’s driving yet oddly sentimental +ou-, Oscar Bettison’s haunting Gauze Vespers veiled with simmering sonorities from dual toy pianos and other innovative orchestrations, Ryan Brown’s Our Friend Adam a verbal play on “Our Friend Atom” a short film that introduced the atom bomb to Ryan as a child who mistook atom to be Adam, Jamu for ensemble and electronics by Christine Southworth drawing from Gamelan melodies, Clay Chaplin’s Rememories, a structured improvisation using 3-D video as a meta-structure for the ensemble based on the relationship of time and memory, and an exciting new work from the Carlsbad Music Festival Tsar, Matt McBane.
The Ear Unit will be premiering my new work Rememories for 3D chromadepth video and improvising ensemble

CEAIT Festival @ REDCAT
Sound art pioneer Yasunao Tone and composer Marina Rosenfeld headline this year’s program of innovative and unconventional electroacoustic and cross-media work from CalArts’ Center for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology (CEAIT). Rosenfeld’s wide-ranging performance and installation works include live remixes of her own handmade acetate records; the nail-polish-bottle-on-electric guitar music of the Sheer Frost Orchestra; and last spring’s Teenage Lontano–a “cover version” of György Ligeti’s modernist landmark sung by a choir of teenagers–at the Whitney Biennial. She brings a new composition for her “phonographic speaker,” a rotating loudspeaker whose arcs of electroacoustic sound, emitted at 33 1/3 rpm, emulate the graceful, leisurely tempo of an long-playing record. Opening on Friday are Tom Recchion, a pioneer in low-tech sonic exploration; and K. Atchley’s Turtles, a multi-channel, laptop concert work in which manipulation of the amplitude and spatial placement of sine wave tones effects harmonic and timbral changes. The legendary Tone ranks among the first Japanese artists to “compose” happenings and improvisations in the 1960s. A veteran of Fluxus, Group Ongaku, Hi-Red Center and Team Random, he has created pieces for “wounded” CDs, computer systems, film, TV and radio, as well as environmental art. His work here entails a surround-sound automatic collage of source material from CDs and radio. Opening on Saturday are composer, improviser, and sound artist Clay Chaplin, mangling political speech in real time to create ambient tapestries of sound; and Laura Steenberge discovering that the dictionary is alive in her Lecture on Words.
I’ll be performing a new laptop improvisation called Surge the Purge.

Sound in Space Explorations

Sound in Space will traverse diversity by presenting cross sections of the local sound art community. From sound installation to Fluxus note card pieces and field recordings to live ambient music, the topography of the musical fringe is as varied as the community is geographically dispersed. This is a program for the community by artists in the community. Every performance is free with an aim to urge active collaboration and exchange between artists and audiences. While the sea and space are the dark unknowns, they don’t have to be unknowable. Sound in Space are vehicles with which the community is invited to navigate and explore art that has been termed “experimental,” or “conceptual;” loose terms that create a barrier rather than extend a hand.

I had the original idea for this festival but none of it would have happend without Lara Bank and Aaron Drake. The three of us have organized 13 concerts and 12 installations for the month of February. Check out the Sound in Space website for all of the details.

Mario’s Furniture
TELIC Arts Exchange is pleased to present Mario’s Furniture 2, an installation and interactive game. Created by artists Hillary Mushkin and S.E. Barnet, the project integrates wireless technology with artistic production and performance. In most video games you just sit on the couch, but when you play Mario’s Furniture 2 you MOVE the couch, in fact you move the whole living room! Mario’s Furniture began in 2002 as a video installation, including a single night of performance. Four years later, Mario’s Furniture 2 – created with programmer Clay Chaplin and electronic specialist Lorin Parker – is now a wireless environment where viewers become players, physically moving objects before a relentlessly panning camera, all the while watching themselves and their scores in real time on a large-screen projection.

Bring your ears: Physic is an evening of sound art performance and installation at Beyond Baroque, in the original Venice city hall as part of the Beyond Music Performance Series. Curated by Bob Bellerue, the show will feature a handful of wildly diverse sound artists, musicians and composers engaging with the physical practice of music and instrument making, utilizing custom approaches and equipment in acoustic, analog and digital designs for unique sound projects. The title is in appreciation of the integration of magic and physics, and it reflects an emphasis on the physical act of sound making and designing interfaces.

Eight composer-artists will be featured in the show. There will be performances by Clay Chaplin, Yong-Jin Jeong, Bob Bellerue, Liam Mooney, Yorgos Adamis, and TOG (Robert Duckworth and Roddy Schrock). Installations will be presented by Matthew O’Donnell, Sam Torrisi, Bob Bellerue, Masahiko Sunami and Brad Breeck.

Clay Chaplin at the EarJam Festival
“EARJAM brings together a cross-section of L.A.s aural artists for a sonic journey through a diverse range of musical genres and sonic experiences — from experimental free jazz to accoustic/electronic hybrids, from trombones, saxophones and guitars to computer-driven wireless instruments producing an unexpected array of musical compositions, from classically-trained vocalists to ones with “noisy clothes”, from experimental funk to microtonal ambiences, from a mini-opera excerpt to a noise/beat improv collective to a world music trio, from hand-made invented percussion instruments to pop accordians, mouth harps, and a hurdy gurdy, to the obsolete technology of a theremin. Be prepared to sample the sounds of LA’s innovators, artists whose work is well-known and others you have never encountered before.”
