The Cacophonator is an amazing noise making synthesizer based on the 40106 IC chip. The sonic complexity of this circuit is surprising considering its small part count and easy to decipher board layout. The circuit contains four oscillators that are easily manipulated and combined for unique noises and sounds. One unique feature of the Cacophonator is that the remaining two oscillators on the 40106 chip are not connected to the audio chain but are manipulated to simply make the chip “freak out” which produces unexpected sonic results. Another fun feature is the implementation of a voltage starve switch to slowly deprive the chip of voltage and to produce even more sonic peculiarities.
