Recording session with Mark Trayle

Recording session with Mark Trayle

I recently finished a recording session with Mark Trayle. We recorded his piece Nearfield Edges in the Wild Beast concert hall at CalArts. Mark’s piece uses a piezo-based feedback mechanism to activate the space with very high frequencies (in the 13K range) that bounce around the room and create mind altering sonic experiences. I used the mid-side stereo technique with a Schoeps CM5 as the mid and an AKG 414 as the side for the main pair. I used an array of Neumann km-184s in the back of the hall to capture room resonances. Look for a release of the piece in the late summer of 2014.

Gramophone review of In the Beginning

I recently came across a review in Gramophone Magazine of David Rosenboom’s In the Beginning double CD set that I recorded and mixed last summer for New World Records. The reviewer complemented the sound quality which makes me happy considering the amount of work that went into the project!

“In the Beginning II, for example, is an exploration by Rosenboom of an overwhelming, embryonic dread, with uneasy Indian harmonies and a splendid gong – an audiophile demo piece for low electronic bass”

“The studio recordings made since 2009 at the California Institute of the Arts vividly document the new sounds possible with configurations such as eight trombones (all played by Mike Svoboda) or a keyboard and two oranges, are complimented by live performances from 1979 and 1980 with Don Buchla’s 300 Series Electric Music Box.”

Recording project is a wrap!

I just completed mixing and mastering a two CD set for composer David Rosenboom’s series of works called In the Beginning. The project will be released as a two CD set in November of 2012 on New World Records. We initially recorded a couple of the pieces back in 2009 but the project hit full stride in 2012 when we recorded a woodwind quintet, solo piano work, and a large scale piece involving a string quartet, brass quartet, percussion quartet, woodwind quartet, and two pianos. We completed the editing, mixing, and mastering in the summer of 2012.

Recording for Heather Lockie

I recently completed a recording session with composer/performer Heather Lockie who composed a really interesting and eerie sounding piece for string quintet and voices called Dryads . The plan is to edit and mix this summer and the piece should be available in the Fall of 2012.

Recording for Mike Winter

Just completed a recording session with composer Mike Winter who has written a really interesting piece for electric guitar quartet called lower limit . The plan is to edit and mix this summer and the piece should be available in the Fall of 2012.

Rosenboom Quartets Recording

I just completed the tracking for a recording of David Rosenboom’s large ensemble work titled In the Beginning V. The piece will be included on a two-cd set of David Rosenboom’s music to be released in the Fall of 2012 on New World Records. See the photos from the session below:

Dewar, LeBaron, Centazzo Recording

I just completed a recording for Andrew Dewar, Anne LeBaron, and Andrea Centazzo. The trio performed an amazing set of improvisations for soprano sax, acoustic and electric harp, and percussion. We recorded in the spacious-sounding CalArts percussion room over the course of a Saturday afternoon. See the photos from the session below:

Rosenboom Quintet Recording

I just completed the tracking for a recording of David Rosenboom’s woodwind quintet titled In the Beginning. The Midnight Winds Quintet performed the piece over two days. The piece will be included on a two-cd set of David Rosenboom’s music to be released in the Fall of 2012 on New World Records. See the photos from the session below:

Mastering project for Innova Records

I’ve been working the last couple of weeks mastering a two CD set of improvisations for Innova Records by composer / harpist Anne LeBaron. The CD tracks are taken from a collection of live recordings made throughout the last ten years. Tracks include solo harp improvisations, duos, trios, and quartets. Some of the performers include Anne Lebaron, Leroy Jenkins, Ronit Kirchman, and Kristin Haraldsdottir. Look for the new CD around the end of August.
